3rd March, 2009 - Today, I was self-made an English tutor, replacing a tutor at school who was not able to attend classes due to an injured toe ... Boy! it was fun and well .... not an easy task having to handle some hyperactive students as well as some very weak ones too !
Applied some techniques learned during the various seminars conducted by T. Harv :
- Follow The Leader to warm the students up before starting the class
- Give the person next to you a high five and shout Well Done !
- Repeat after me - reinforce what I have just said as repetition and participation makes better retention
- Students gave themselves 'feel good' names and introduced themselves like "Hello, I am Happy Vincent", "Hello, I am Handsome Victor", "Hello, my name is Cool Ashaari", "Hi, my name is Smart Tan Jia Lok" ...
- Birthday celebration for the 5 March birthday boys and having the rest of the class give birthday gifts in the form of hugs and handshakes
- Group/Team work - students came up with Get Well Soon cards for their tutor
Also tried my hand on using the CD bought months ago : the A-Star interactive English Fun For Everyone (Vol 1 Nouns). The animation and interesting games got the kids excited and well, all my primary 3 students for the day had fun and well ... I would say, it was an interesting twist of event, landing myself as a tutor certainly made my day more colourful ^_^
