Softspot for Troubled Children

26th March, 2009 - This book got me captivated. Yes, it did. Just had to stay awake and finish reading it, way past my bedtime :-)
When special education teacher Torey Hayden left the classroom for work in a children’s psychiatric ward, a diverse trio entered her life.
Abused nine-year-old Cassandra lashed out at anyone who tried to get close. At four, Drake refused to speak to anyone but his mother, and after a stroke, elderly Gerda was trapped in crippling depression and self-imposed silence.
From interfering family members and caregivers to the challenge of building trust, Hayden recounts her experiences and the small, startling breakthroughs that offered hope.
Twilight Children is the story of one determined woman and three individuals battling overwhelming odds. Told with compassion, sensitivity and humour, it is a powerful, unforgettable book that reminds us of the strength and beauty of the human spirit.
Personally, I find I could learn a lot from the therapy sessions narrated in the book, how Torey handled the sessions, choice of words used when communicating with the troubled children, how she draws them out through various games and tools .... Very realistic and applicable to real life circumstances, I believe.
Last Saturday, during my nephew's birthday party, my mom shared with me her views when I brought along Jasmine's friends who came and stayed with us during the recent school holidays. Mom advised me : try not to entertain other kids for with it, carries enormous responsibility on my part as an adult person, taking care of other kids' welfare when they are with me.... I could understand where she is coming from and I appreciate her genuine concern. It's mom's way of loving me. At that point, I just nod my head. Guess I just have this soft spot for children, so to speak ^_^
